Hands On Science is so cool! According to our 5th graders. I put together a lesson a few weeks ago where we did some activities that had to do with Ground Water (the topic of our science reading for the week). We discussed impermeable layers, ground water, wells, the water table and much, much more. I thought it might be fun to catalogue some of our recent activities.

We are talking about the impermeable layer and what this means for wells. I had a model made of sand and clay that they just could not get close enough to!

They then had a chance to "dig" for the water table and notice how it is the same depth between two "lakes".

Finally, we talked about pollution and what that can do to our ground water. The blue Koolaid was our "polluted water" and as we pumped water out of our "well" the blue began to come up with it. Even the principal, who walked in to see what all of the ruckus was about, was engaged and excited to see what would happen to the ground water!

We try and have Science Fridays as many Fridays as student behavior permits and when we do have them, they are pretty neat to behold as students engage in their own learning and learn by doing. What a great way to learn and have fun!
